Lou Gehrig - ALS

(Speech Review By: Delani Ennis)

On July 4th, 1939 one of the greatest speeches of all time was given. It was a hot muggy day in New York City when a recently retired Yankee first baseman, Lou Gehrig uttered the famous words, “Fans for the past two weeks you have been reading about the bad break I got, yet today, I consider myself to be the luckiest man on the face of the earth.”

The bad break being referred to is his diagnosis of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, ALS, which is now better known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. A nervous system disease in which nerve cells start to break down, weaken muscles, and impact physical function. The cause is unknown and unfortunately, to this day, is still incurable.

This diagnosis, which forced his retirement, pretty much guaranteed he would have less than two years to live, and yet he considers himself the “luckiest man alive”? Gehrig went on to detail his amazing journey throughout his baseball career, the incredible men that surrounded his success, as well as his personal blessings, and family. In closing, he stated “So, I close in saying, that I may have had a tough break, but I still have an awful lot to live for.”

The strength and dignity needed to put into words his good fortune instead of bitterness and anger at coming demise is not only a testament of Gehrig’s character but proof of what a strong man he is. To this day, his speech is still continuing to touch and inspire many and is capable of bringing a grown man to tears.

An Event Impacting Generations

From Woodstock to Bethel Woods

(By: Delani Enis)

No one could have foreseen the impact that one music festival would have on a sleepy little town in upstate New York.

On August 15th, 16th, and 17th in 1969 the stars aligned and worlds collided creating one of the most known music events of a lifetime, Woodstock. 32 musical acts met up with 400,000 free spirits in an attempt to escape the reality of the Vietnam war.

Decades later, the location of Woodstock was purchased and Bethel Woods Center for the Arts came to be. In keeping the rich history of this historic landmark, this art center has become a premier summer concert location in between the Catskill and Hudson Valley. However, that is only one small aspect of what Bethel Woods has to offer.

Bethel Woods opened a museum inspired by Woodstock and holds multiple festivals throughout the year. From the Beer and Wine Festival to Harvest Fest and Christmas Market, there is a little something for everyone.

What is most important to me, would have to be the many experiences offered throughout the year by the Education and Outreach Program. Such as, various “Project Identity” music, theater, and art classes. I personally have had the pleasure of taking advantage of several opportunities offered at Bethel Woods which have significantly impacted who I am and where I am headed, all because of one weekend back in 1969.

Battle of the Theme Parks - Orlando, Florida

Walt Disney World vs. Universal Studios

(By: Delani Ennis)

While there are many theme parks located in Orlando, Florida. Two of them stand strong against the rest. They are Walt Disney World and Universal Studios. Both having multiple theme parks, water parks, and shopping locations, making it a great family vacation destination. The true question is, which park is the one for you?

Let's start with Disney World. Disney currently has four theme parks, Magic Kingdom, the original park that is like no other and the one that started it all. It opened in 1971 to the general public. There is just something so magical about walking down Main Street towards the iconic Cinderella Castle. People can’t seem to resist it.

Second came Epcot, which opened in 1982. Here one can travel to the past, present, future, and all around the world all in one day. MGM Studios, now Hollywood Studios came next in 1989 and is all about entertainment, movies, music, and theater. Last but not least, Animal Kingdom, opened on April 22nd, 1998 where you can encounter wildlife on Kilimanjaro Safari's and experience high speed thrills on Expedition Everest.

After the success of the theme parks, Disney added 2 water parks, Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach. There is also a premier shopping location center, Disney Springs; which name was just recently changed from Downtown Disney after a huge expansion. The Disney Boardwalk is also a beautiful location to go to for shopping and entertainment.

On the other hand, Universal only has 2 theme parks, Universal and Island of Adventure, with a water park opening this May titled Volcano Bay. They, along with Disney, do have a shopping location, City Walk that has a boardwalk type atmosphere just outside of their theme parks. Universal recently added what most would consider their most popular attraction, “The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.” Wizarding World consists of two large sections inside of the park that so closely resemble the locations in the movies that visitors are totally immersed in the experience.

While it is hard to say which park is best, both parks offer a large variety of attractions; are constantly expanding and adding additions to make it feel like a whole new experience every time you go, and definitely offer something for everyone to enjoy.

  Call of Duty

(Video Game Review By: Priscilla Cassase)

Call of duty is a violent war game where every player is a military character and chooses a gun and perks then sets off to battle. This game might be harsh for some but not too intense for preteens. It has eerie music that sets an interesting mood of suspense and oddly cozy.  Although I played regularly, I never encountered a glitch with the amazing graphics, which are surprisingly detailed.  Although I personally enjoy the narrating comments and fast pace gun matches, it is not for everybody. It can cause family animosity. You can find it at any game store and most online shopping websites. It’s a time waster, but also enjoyable with competitive family and friends. Usually sells between $25.00 and $70.00.

Everything, Everything

(A Book Review By: Delani Ennis)

Could you imagine, never being able to feel the warmth of the sun on a hot summer day? or breathe in the fresh, cool air after it rains in the spring? or the cold of snow in winter? or even the crisp air and seeing the leaves change in autumn? Well, the book “Everything, Everything” tells the story of a young 18-year-old, Madeline Whittier, who has not left the house in over seventeen years and probably never will. She has SCID (severe combined immunodeficiency), which basically means she's allergic to just about everything in the outside world. The only safe place for her, is in her house, with its built in air filters that sterilize the air she breaths. The only people she's ever met are her mother, who is also her Dr. and her nurse,

Carla. Madeline obviously does not love being confined to her home, but she's okay with it. Possibly, because everything else to her is so unknown, but still, she’s seems content. That is, until a boy named Olly and his family move in next door and try to befriend her. Then, all of a sudden Madeline’s acceptance of her rare situation is turned upside down, as she begins taking risks and wanting to learn more about life beyond the sanitized walls of her home. “Everything, Everything” absolutely is everything, everything, you could hope a book could be, and more. It is a powerful, intelligent, unique, romantic, coming of age story that will shatter your heart into a million pieces and leave you absolutely speechless! with an ending that is unexpected and to die for!

Everything, Everything, is the first novel written by author, Nicola Yoon and was released in 2015. After the success of her first book she continued her journey as a writer with her second book titled “The Sun Is Also A Star” which was released in late 2016. Nicola currently lives in Los Angeles, CA with her husband, writer and designer, David Yoon who created all of the illustrations for the book.

Almost two years after its release “Everything, Everything” is still flying off shelves and is soon to be a major motion picture, starring Amanda Stenburg and Nick Robinson and is coming to theaters near you in late May. So go grab of copy of this dazzling book and catch the movie on or after its premier date May 19th 2017. It promises to be emotionally charged and may even make you question, what are you willing to risk for love?

Cloak of the Light

(Book Review By: Aedan Roach)

Cloak of the Light is a fictional book about spiritual warfare. It is the first book of the three book series, the Wars of the Realm. The other two books are called Rise of the Fallen and Light of the Last.

In the Cloak of the Light, the main character, Drew Carter, loses his father at age 12. He and his mother are then forced for financial reasons to move from town to town, eventually settling in Kansas. His high school years are filled with rough times with school, friends, and just life in general. The only highlight in his life during this time was the relationship he had with his father’s best friend, Jake, who taught him survival skills.

At the end of high school, he looked forward to graduating and entering college, so as to start a new beginning. While in college, he has an accident, which leaves him blind and unable to return to school. Even though the doctors said he would never see again, he is graced with new abilities. These abilities lead him to be able to fight a spiritual warfare of good vs. evil.

While reading this book, I found myself unable to put it down, looking forward to each new chapter. The action in the book was intense and full of suspense. The author, Chuck Black, provides believers and nonbelievers the ability to comprehend the spiritual warfare that goes on within us every day.

This book would be a great book for nonbelievers to read because it demonstrates the battle of good vs. evil. It might even spark a seed in nonbelievers allowing Christ to grow. At the end of the book, Chuck Black offers his readers what the Bible specifically says about spiritual warfare. Chuck Black is an excellent author and has had great life experiences. He spent eight years in the Air Force traveling the world as a communications engineer and an F-16 fighter pilot. He is now the author of fifteen books. I would definitely recommend reading this book to all.

Hank The Cow Dog

(Book Review By: Priscilla Cassase)

Growing up I listened to a comedic series called hank the cow dog . The main character Hank stars as a dog on a ranch in Texas or as he calls himself “head of ranch security.” You get to see and experience in a humorous way how he perceives every sticky situation that all animals and people put him through. As you read of the adventures and suspenseful situations you realize there are great morals in every book. You can follow his life through over 50 feel good books, some written and even more audios.

This short, juicy and creative series is fantastic and I would recommend to anyone especially for your children to read or listen while they sleep. Even though they are simple they get your head gears really spinning.

Let’s Go Rangers!!

Sports Review- NHL(National Hockey League)

(By: Delani Ennis)

The New York Rangers hockey team gave their teammate, forward, Derek Stepan the gift of a win for his 500 th NHL game.

On Monday, March 6 th , 2017 the NY Rangers traveled to Tampa Bay to meet up against the Lightening at Amelie Arena, where they pulled out a big win in overtime. Despite the obvious attempts made by the ref’s to steer the game the other way.

The referee’s blatant favoritism towards the Lightening was not going to be enough to save the day. The Ranger’s penalty killers were able to hold the Lightening at bay for all six of their power plays. Ranger’s goalie Raanta had an amazing 38 saves throughout the game.

However, it was a frustrating game for many of the fans, dressed in their best NY gear. The game was slightly slow for the fast paced visiting New Yorker’s.

If not for the indoor lightening, created to awaken the Tampa Bay fans, and the flying fists of Tanner Glass (NY) and Luke Witkowski (TB), many could have napped until overtime. In the end, the win went to the team that didn’t blink. As per Lightening coach Jon Cooper, “Overtime is not about creating chances, it's about capitalizing on mistakes. We made a mistake and they capitalized. That was it." And for that, this New York girl says thank you!

Trumps Inauguration Speech

(By: Priscilla Cassase)

Trumps well put together speech was quite a powerful one. He talked about how we, the American people, have been ignored by the government, which has grown too powerful. The well organized speech was short and juicy and boy did he recognize the issues that have been going on. All of which have been overlooked for years! Listening to him speak was really a pleasure. His patriotism has brought life to many Americans including myself. He said, “When you open your heart to patriotism, there is no room for prejudice”. This really got the people clapping! His whole speech was continuously engaging and constantly moving forward.

Little to no repetition kept the audience well in tune and looking forward to the next concern he was going to commit to resolve. He did not hold back about the corruption and warped mindset that has prevailed in previous government administrations. He said what needed to be said but not to purposefully offend any particular people but to bring out to the light the cold hard truth. He gained trust because he spoke plainly and It showed that he has perception and is not afraid to make changes for the better.

The speech was uplifting and gave Americans hope. Donald Trump truly believes he can make America great again. The inaugurations speech also gave a certain peace that we all have not felt in years. Trump is very aware and intuitive of what’s going on, and not afraid to face it! His speech was fantastically done, I would rate it highly.

X Games Adaptive Moto X Racing

(By Aedan Roach)

This Moto X Adaptive Race took place in 2013 at the Staples Center and was broadcasted on ESPN. The competitors in this race were Max Gomez, Steve Howe, Chris Ridgway, Mike Schultz, Todd Thompson, and Dave Turner. These men have had some type of injury or birth defect, which has left them without a limb. Even with a physical disability, they have shown their determination to not allow their disability to affect their ability to race their dirt bikes. Before the race began, Mike Schultz gave us a background on his life.

As a professional snowmobile racer, he was thrown from his machine during a race, which left him as an amputee above the knee. Determined to continue to follow his dreams, he developed a prototype called a “Motoknee”, which allowed him to race again. This led to the development of his company, Biodapt Inc., which sells extreme sports prosthetics. He wears a microprocessor leg, which allows him the mobility to move. Jokingly he said, “when he forgets to plug in his leg, he is stalled.”

The race began with Ridgeway taking the lead with Schultz right behind him. This was a twelve lap race with a 65-foot ramp jump centered on the track. At the fourth lap, Schultz and Thompson passed Ridgway, which allowed for Schultz to take the lead with Thompson just behind. At the eighth lap, Thompson tried to take Shultz but never succeeded. The final lap was intense as Thompson tried to pick up enough speed to pass Shultz; however, he was unsuccessful and Schultz won the race. Showing good sportsmanship, Thompson congratulated Schultz on his win. Schultz is now a five times gold
winner in this sport. This was an incredible race to watch because it was apparent that their shared disabilities led them to a greater drive and a compassion for the race and each other.

Magic NutriBullet Blender Review

(By: Priscilla Cassase)

So many blenders to chose from! One blender, that surpasses most other blenders, is the Magic Nutribullet.

It has a high-torque power base and 600-watt motor. The simple but effective blade is very useful for making smoothies, pureeing and effortlessly grinding nuts and grains for baking brownies, etc.

It is powerful enough to grind up ice without overworking the motor. I have never had a mechanical problem with the motor or blade, however, one safety tab on the cup broke off. Being these safety tabs are so crucial to the usability of the blender, they should not have broken so easily. This blender may not suit the needs of every individual but it is overall an excellent blender and well worth the money.

Amazon Echo

By Aedan Roach

The Amazon Echo, a hands-free device, is a product made by Amazon. The Echo uses Alexa Voice Service to do many things like answer questions, read audio books and news, report traffic and weather, give information on local businesses, provide sports scores and schedules, play music from Amazon Music, Spotify, Pandora, iHeartRadio, TuneIn, and even more just by using your voice.

There is also the smart home feature in which you can have the Echo turn on lights, change the temperature on thermostats, lock doors, close blinds, turn on or off a fan and even more. These functions are sold separately by companies such as WeMo, Philips Hue, Samsung SmartThings, Wink,  Insteon, Nest, and Ecobee smart home devices. To use the Echo, you say the wake word which is “Alexa”.

The Echo is very helpful in everyday use and can keep learning your daily needs. It has seven microphones to hear your commands from just about any place in the room. The speaker can also crank out some great sound when you are listening to music with its 2.5-inch woofer and 2.0-inch tweeter. It does need Wi-Fi for all these actions, which could pose a problem for those who do not have Wi-Fi. The price, $179.99, is reasonable for all it has to offer.

If you cannot afford this device, then you could purchase the Echo Dot for $50. This product has everything that the Echo has, except it does not offer the sound quality. I have enjoyed the Amazon Echo for all that it has to offer. I will say that there are times when I must repeatedly call “Alexa” before she wakes because she is next to the TV and can catch too much of the background noise. Overall, I would recommend this product to many users.

U.S. Mens Water Polo Loses Again

(By: Priscilla Cassase)

“We need a new state of mind.”
(Tony Azevedo)

Croatia’s indisputable win against the U.S was a somewhat embarrassing loss to the proud United States. The U.S hopes of winning the medal were crushed by Croatia’s victorious win with a score of 7-5. They also suffered a loss against Spain, ending the game with a close call of 10-9. The captain of the U.S. team, Tony Azevedo, was born in Rio Brazil but grew up in Long Beach, CA. He was one of the greatest water polo payers in American history! He stated to the press after their loss, “We have to win the next three games. We’ve got to win now. We have to play like a team and stop feeling sorry for ourselves. Right now we’re playing like victims and babies and everyone is worried about everything but what they need to worry about.” In the U.S battle to defeat Spain, Spain took an early lead but Tony Azevedo responded rather quickly. He threw an outside shot in the upper left corner placing his team up on the scoreboard! The constant battle of control over the course of the game got heated. Albert Lifante popped a shot just over the head of the veteran U.S goalie, affirming the power Spain never lost. The last minute to the game Alex Bowen muscled in his third goal to bring the U.S just one point behind. But it was too late to save the U.S from the disappointing start in Rio. Tony later stated, “We need a new state of mind.”

Super Bowl Fifty-One

(By Aedan Roach)

Super Bowl Fifty-one was a phenomenal game, in which the New England Patriots versed the Atlanta Falcons.

At the beginning of the game, the Falcons won the coin toss and decided to receive the ball in the second half. In first quarter, neither team scored which was mind blowing because you expect that one team would at least score.

During the second quarter, the Falcons came on strong and scored two touchdowns within five minutes. At the end of the second quarter, Robert Alford of the Falcons had a pick six, which made the score twenty-one to zero in favor of the Falcons. Finally, the Patriots scored a field goal and put three points on the board, so at the end of the first half the score was 21 to 3 still in favor of the Falcons. Those in the crowd who were rooting for the Falcons because they had never won a Super Bowl, were overly optimistic with the possibility of a win.

The halftime performance was put on by Lady Gaga, which was tasteful and free of any political references. In the third quarter, the Patriots came out with their game face on and ready to score. They scored a touchdown and a field goal but the Falcons also scored another touchdown, which made the score 28 to 12 in favor of the Falcons. In the fourth quarter, the tables turned. Tom Brady, Quarterback of the Patriots, led his team to score two touchdowns with a two-point conversion on both. This was unbelievable how quickly the Patriots turned the game around. The score then tied up to 28-28 and ran into overtime. The Patriots won the coin toss for overtime and decided to receive the ball because they knew whoever made the first touchdown would win the game. The Patriots drove the ball down the field and James White drove it in for a touchdown. With an unbelievable comeback, the Patriots won Super Bowl 51 with a score of 34 to 28.

This was Tom Brady’s fifth Super Bowl win and he is the only quarterback to have achieved this. He showed his thankfulness by dropping to his knees and was overcome with emotion.

Calvary Christian School With Danielle Cassase

(Written By: Delani Ennis)

Yesterday, I had the privilege of speaking with a member of our esteemed leadership team, Danielle Cassase. Mrs Cassase started at Calvary four years ago with her two daughters Natalie and Priscilla.

At first, the Cassase's were uncertain as to whether or not Calvary was the right cooperative for their family. Due to the fact, they were originally looking for a group that was heavily academic in addition to extra curricular activities. However, in no time at all, Calvary with all its charms, won them over.

Being a member of the leadership board has enabled Mrs. Cassase to incorporate her desire for academics which has become a benefit for us all.

One thing that Mrs. Cassase really likes about Calvary is that the classes are hands on and immersive, where students are encouraged to really think and solve important issues. She also enjoys that the parents and teachers can learn as much as the students. She appreciates how the parents and students have a large say in what gets taught, where as at other places she has been the students were given a schedule and they didn't have a lot of say in what went on when it came to education and learning.

Some other things that Mrs. Cassase would like to see happen at Calvary as we move forward, is that she feels we could improve in the area of really getting our students prepared for college.

Such as, learning and studying for CLEP tests, admissions writing, building portfolios, and collage level essay writing. However she does believe that Calvary has an advantage over other cooperatives because of its official New York State school number.

When asked if she would recommend someone to the cooperative; she quickly replied with absolutely! stating “she has previously recommend it to different families; especially those of whom were feeling over whelmed; as it is an outlet where they could bring their children to learn and find different resources, as well as those who could use a social outlet.” Advice she would give to someone on their first day is to stick with it, do not judge it by the first day; wait and see how it goes.

A helpful suggestion would be to write down your child’s class schedule and room number as an attempt to make the day less hectic. She also says to offer up your gifts, as God has blessed everyone with different gifts, for example, if you are good at art teach art, or if you're better with small children try the nursery. Do what makes you comfortable and would be beneficial for all involved and help the co-op run smoothly and attempt to create a stress free day.

When asked why it is she loves teaching, I was surprised at her response; stating that she actually doesn't like it at all. She is much more a learner, than a teacher; her teaching style is more interactive and hands on where she learns along with the students in an attempt to keep them engaged; compared to just lecturing to them or assigning tests. If Mrs. Cassase were to attend Calvary as a student knowing what she does now; her class schedule would look as follows:

It would be two days a week; the first day being writing, a lab science, debate team, and CLEP exams for collage credit, because she felt high school was not challenging enough.

Her second day would be more performance, like drama, choir, and maybe even an organized sport; not just gym class.

She feels meeting a second day for discussion would be good, due to the fact you can't do everything in one day. She feels that teaching one day and then actually working and testing another day would be beneficial because “you can ask a child to read but by the time they get to class, days later, they most likely will not remember it.”

All in all, I think Mrs. Cassase has some great ideas, what do you think?

The Retired Firefighter

(Written By: Priscilla Cassase)

Dominic Cassase has been a retired New York City Firefighter for 11 years. He spent 20 years on the job; working in Woodlawn Bronx and Bedford-Stuyvesant Brooklyn.

He was forced to retire after several job related injuries to his knees, ending his career. Now he’s living the retired life, which to his and many other retiree’s surprise is not what was expected.

When Dominic was asked “What was your ideal for a retired lifestyle?”. He went on to say that for several years he knew he would have house projects to catch up on, the ones he missed while he was working. Then, he thought, he would slip into an effortless life. To his amazement it didn't play out that way in the least.

Moreover, I then asked, “How it was different?”. He began to laugh, then continued to explain how, ironically, he has been working non stop for the past 11 years. He further stated, “Everyday is a Saturday,” pointing out that every task and activity is not forced upon him but are still somewhat impending. The reality of his retirement was an absolute in version of his dream.

Dominic was asked if he would change anything about his retirement and although the ongoing workload wasn't his preference, he would not alter it. After several minutes of conversing, he clearly expressed that to his astonishment his income is larger than it was while employed. He really does love being retired.

Many who are forced to retire live with a dissatisfaction of not completing everything they’ve desired. When I asked Dominic if this was a regret for him, he said it was not, for the most part. One of Dominic’s unaccomplished desires was, first, to become a rescue firefighter at a special company. Second, being promoted as an officer.

Even though it was a regret, he had not made any real attempt to become a rescue fireman. Despite the fact those wishes were unfulfilled, they did not compare to all the benefits he obtained while working there. Dominic made note that he left the job with a certain level of confidence after 20 years of service, as well as the ability to overcome stressful and fear inducing situations on a much higher level than the majority.

There are many positive perks with leaving this line of work, but I was curious to see the negative ones. When I asked, he seemed to strain for a moment to find an answer. He then hesitantly stated that there was a certain cynicism towards others that had developed. Perhaps a prejudice or skepticism against many people.

With that being said there are still countless bonuses, one of which is hand skills. Dominic has a bountiful knowledge of all types of tools, construction and even several kinds of knots and how to work with locks. Being retired, Dominic feels enormously satisfied and accomplished from his years of service and is not in the least regretful of his choice of employment. Now, as a retiree, he his comfortable and confident with his life at home.

Mrs. Ennis - A Mother and Teacher To Many

(Written by Aedan Roach)

The Calvary Christian School held at Calvary Bible Church in Deer Park, NY is a school founded for home schooler's in which homeschooling families can participate in an academic program and/or an activity day that focuses on electives, arts, and physical education. Mrs. Ennis, a homeschooling mother, has been teaching at the school for the last three years, while her children attend classes.

Currently, she teaches science and history for the elementary students and debate and fine arts for the high school students. She enjoys teaching all classes but specifically said that she enjoys the informal debates in her debate class. Mrs. Ennis also assists in the drama department for the Calvary Players for the annual play that they put on. She stated that she appreciates that her children can be a part of this group; however, it can be time consuming. She feels that her children are getting the subjects that she wouldn’t necessarily teach at home. At Calvary, she feels like she is part of a family unlike some of the other home school groups she has encountered. She stated that in other home school groups, it is sometimes hard to get to know people because the groups are larger. She enjoys that Calvary is relaxed, less strict, and less rigid.

During the interview, Mrs. Ennis also gave suggestions for improving the school. She stated that it would be beneficial for the children, if other classes such as an automotive class, carpenter class, computer class, and archery were made available. She stated that she would like the school to have a prom, Yearbook committee, school spirit wear, and provide short term sports. She also suggested field trips and instrumental lessons, but understands that the school would then have to hire someone for these lessons, which would make the tuition raise. She stated that the current tuition is affordable because parents teach the classes. Lastly, she expressed that she would like Calvary to have a week off before Christmas and Easter, so her family’s focus is on church.

Mrs. Ennis explained that the school and church is in a transition. Grace Community Church has taken over Calvary Bible and Calvary Christian School and is planning to renovate the entire building. Mrs. Ennis said that everyone attending the school is unsure of the change. Her opinion on the change is that she hopes that the school will still fit in with the new church. She believes that God is in control and that overall it will be a good thing.

Aedan's Journey

(From the Editor)

As a teacher we have the opportunity to guide students through a myriad of subject matter and sometimes the pleasure of actually influencing some to apply lessons learned to their personal lives. I'm not speaking about the general academics of a given subject that is later utilized in a chosen vocation or career; I speak of the student seeing the sincere love and dedication that that teacher has for them as a student and the determination to ensure the personal success of that student.

The Calvary Courier is the avenue that the Calvary Christian School Journalism Class displays their expressive works to the public. Individuals that read this Blog publication on a regular bases will attest to the phenomenal contribution of each student.

Occasionally a student will grab the determination and passion they have witnessed in the classroom, making it their own. One such student who currently contributes to this Blog, is a young man named Aedan. Against excruciating odds beyond measure, he has not only grabbed the passion for Journalism (as visible in his many entries here), he has grabbed an exhilarating passion for life itself; modeling a prodigious example for others.

I will not tell here of the excruciating odds that young Aedan has experienced in his short tenure of this expression we call life; that is for his elucidation, which you may espy at http://aedansjourney.blogspot.com

Who's Your Nanny?

(Movie Review By: Maggie Noakes)

“Nanny McPhee” is a classic movie about a large family with mischievous children, chosen due to its promising features which did disappoint to an extent in more than one way. Unfortunately, it was a short movie that did not leave too much to review, but had an interesting concept. The movie had a fun story-telling atmosphere about it, with narration at the beginning, however, the farther into the movie, the more it began to lose traction. It started out fun and played to the theme of the children’s behavior, but moved toward hidden jokes and began to, like many movies, revolve around romance; so once more we deal with that issue.

Moving on, there was not much time for character development, but the different personalities were made quite clear. I do feel like the producers could have made a prequel to give some backstory on all the different contributing people. Unfortunately, it was a short movie that did not leave too much to review, but had an interesting concept.

All though the movie did mainly focus on two people getting married, the journey to that point was an excitable story to tell children as a bedtime tale. One thing was awkward though, and that was the apparent age gap between certain actors such as the servant girl, Evangaline, and the father of the troublesome children who indeed looked old enough to also be the father of Evangaline.

There’s nothing better than a little magic to make the story more interesting. Nanny McPhee’s walking stick had the power to make certain things happen in order to get the children to do as they were told, however, when it came to the children affecting the lives of others, the Nanny was unable to interfere as long as the young ones were willing to accept the consequences, good or bad, this was a fun way to teach planning ahead.

Much like other movies, there is a strict plot line which can become a bore, unless of course, you are the producer of “Nanny McPhee.” Though there was still a plot to stick to, there were also some curve balls thrown at the audience, making the show more entertaining.

Some aspects that added to the story include the wildly colored house of the main family and the loud clothing and personality of one of the characters, Mrs. Quickly. Like most online entertainment, it was rather cliche but still a fun and playful story, recommended for a family movie night that will keep the kids laughing and the parents searching and chuckling at some of the hidden jokes.

MPAC Nutcracker Ballet

(Theater Review By: Delani Ennis)

On Saturday, December 3rd, and Sunday, December 4th, 2016, the “Milford Performing Arts Center, MPAC,” unveiled their version of “The Nutcracker” for the fifteenth year in a row in the Delaware Vally High School auditorium. Based on Alexandre Dumas Père’s adaptation of the tale that was originally written by E.T.A. Hoffmann and was set to music by composer Pyotr (Peter) Tchaikovsky.

The story takes place in Nuremberg, Germany in 1816. The ballet, consisting of two acts, tells the story of a magical Christmas Eve celebration, after which a young girl’s favorite gift, a nutcracker, comes to life. The Nutcracker leads the girl, Clara, on an enchanted journey, in which they encounter a Rat King and his army, fairies, queens, and living dolls.

MPAC performers include dancers aged as young as age 2 through 18 year old, as well as special appearances by parents and grandparents throughout the show. Costumes where beautiful and well designed to fit the dancer in each part. The stage was very well set, and dressed in the appropriate lighting. Tchaikovsky’s music rang throughout the auditorium, as the aspiring dancers used the excellent choreography to tell the classic tale. Tickets were sold at the door for $5 for children/seniors and $10 for adults . All in all, everything fit together perfectly, and made for a memorable afternoon.

A Different View Of Home

(A Movie Review By: Priscilla Cassase)

Cast:

Jim Parsons as “ Oh ”, Rhianna as “ Gratuity 'Tip' Tucci ”, Steve Martin as “ Captain Smek ”, Jennifer Lopez as “ Lucy Tucci ”, Matt Jones as “ Kyle ”

Produced By: Suzanne Buirgy, Christopher Jenkins, Mireille Soria

Music By: Lorne Balfe, Stargate

Film Editing By:  Nick Fletcher

Casting By: Leslee Feldman, Christi Soper

Production Design By: Kathy Altieri

Art Direction By: Emil Mitev

Synopsis:

Jim Parsons voiced a character by the name of “Oh”. Oh is a sweet, pure hearted “Boov” that is rejected by all others because of a series of mistakes. One final mistake leads him to meet a lost girl “Trip” who is voiced by Rhianna. The story continues as they both join in an adventure to find that one thing they are looking for.

Review:

In an attempt to be funny, the sarcastic humor is childish and obnoxious. Despite the tasteless humor, the storyline follows through, and the emotion behind the voices are well executed. Friendly aliens called “Boov” run from planet to planet in an attempt to escape from their nemesis the “Gorg”. One particular “Boov” known as “Oh” makes one final mistake, which is how he encounters “Trip”. Trip, who is not very fond of the cowardly Boov, makes a deal with “Oh” requiring that he has to help her find a lost loved one. “Oh,” at first is just using Trip as an escape route from all his foes. In their journey to both run away, they are faced with different difficulties and tragedies. Most of the movie is cliche, although there are few scenes that are humorous. In the writers struggle to be funny, it just becomes a distasteful enactment that makes you embarrassed to even be watching it. Overall the stereotypical plot and dull humor ends in a way you would think it would. I would not suggest you waste your time or money to see this.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

(Movie Review By: Delani Ennis)

“Rogue One”, the latest movie in the Star Wars saga was recently released on December 16th, 2016. While Rogue One is considered to be a stand alone film, it is actually prequel leading up to Star Wars episode 4, A New Hope. It story takes place immediately prior to the A New Hope in the Star Wars timeline. Rogue One was created to fill in the gaps in the republics history. It’s sole purpose is to explain how the plans to the Death Star were obtained and how it was able to be destroyed so easily. Questions that have plagued the most devout fans for years.

The story follows a former scientist named Galen Erso, who is played by Mads Mikkelsen, and his daughter Jyn, who is played by actress Felicity Jones, as well as the protagonist, the evil Orson Krennic played by actor, Ben Mendelsohn. It is Galen after all who is contracted by the Empire to engineer the most powerful weapon in the galaxy, the Death Star. Knowing that her father holds the key to its destruction, a vengeful Jyn holds out hope that her father is the man she knows him to be.

Rogue one is a science fiction/action film by Walt Disney and Lucas Films, that was rated PG-13 for violence and action packed nature. For every fan that says it is the best, there is another that say it is arguably the worst of all Star Wars films.

The ending, without giving it away, is absolutely perfect in every way, bringing the viewer directly to the beginning of A New Hope making it an amazing prequel. In the end, Rogue One is a strong movie, there are some truly great action scenes, amazing special effects, and some very funny moments, along with multiple references to the other movies, but it is the ending that truly makes the film. Whether you are a Star Wars fanatic or are just looking for a good movie experience, go see Rogue One and decide for yourself if Jyn is right to believe in Galen or has he joined the dark side????

(A Play Review By Maggie Noakes)

Aladdin is a very popular Disney movie that I selected because it was a highly recommended performance.

While the actors and stage workers alike did a fantastic job, the show also had some downsides. Unfortunately, it was hard to hear, but that was do to watching a recording and having a rather cheerful live audience, and that cannot be controlled.

What was disliked most about Aladdin was the story line; it was slightly cliche as it
seems entertainment not revolving around love is seldom found, however, there were good parts too, such as incredible special effects and the genie being more modernized to be a sarcastic character who references all the viral jokes such as, “What are those” or “Bye Felisha” with a sassy hair flip to non-existent hair spice it up.

Throughout the performance, character development could be seen well as the actors became their part. Though not everyone had lines, the mannerisms were still either charming or just down right hilarious.

Not much could be improved as the show was a job well done with choreography fit for any event and catchy songs that viewers will continue to hear day and night. And while there were other funny things and a wise casting choice, the plot was very simple, thus not much room was left for writing. There were few major changes so it can be challenging to write a satisfactory review.

Now, in the way of villains, the selection for those characters was absolutely magnificent. The puppeteer did his job very well and had the voices down to a science and though the puppeteer was not invisible, he made up for that by matching his puppet’s movements and doing facial expressions to go along; this made it seem more like the puppet was talking and less like a man was controlling it. For such a short timeframe of only one hour, the production was well done.

In conclusion, I think that this should be recommended only to a select audience that find such simple stories enjoyable. I watched the program on youtube, posted by “Inside the Magic” and performed by “Disney California Adventure.” so I encourage everyone to go and find out their opinion.
